What is the difference between assisted living and memory care in Michigan?
Assisted living gives daily help to people who can find their way around and ask for help; memory care is built for people whose dementia makes that unreliable -- secured exits, staff trained to redirect, and a routine designed around confusion. In Michigan neither is a separate license.
| Assisted living | Memory care | |
|---|---|---|
| License | Home for the Aged or AFC | Same licenses; LARA lists Alzheimer's among populations served |
| It is | Daily personal care, meals, medication help | Daily care plus dementia-specific supervision and programming |
| It isn't | A secured unit or a dementia program | A nursing home or a separate state license |
| Written disclosure | Not required | Required for HFAs and nursing homes that market it (MCL 333.20178) |
| Published Michigan median | $5,750/month (CareScout 2025) | None exists |
When does someone with dementia need memory care instead of assisted living?
The usual turning points are exit-seeking (trying to leave and not knowing the way back), nights without sleep, needing cues for every step of a task, and distress or aggression in busy rooms.
Many people with early dementia live well in a regular home for the aged or a small AFC home, especially a quiet one. The question to ask any home is what it does when memory declines after move-in. If the answer is a move, plan for it now rather than during a crisis.

Does memory care cost more than assisted living?
Usually, because of higher staffing, but there is no published Michigan memory care median to quantify it; CareScout does not survey memory care in any state.
Compare written quotes, and ask homes for the aged for the supplemental-fee section of their dementia disclosure. Ask whether the rate changes as dementia progresses -- the second-year bill is the one families underestimate.
Which West Michigan homes for the aged serve residents with Alzheimer's?
LARA marks 43 of the area's 55 homes for the aged as serving residents with Alzheimer's; these are the homes most likely to run a distinct memory care neighborhood.
Kent County 27, Ottawa County 13, Allegan County 2, Montcalm County 1, and Ionia County 0.
Can a couple stay together if one spouse has dementia?
Sometimes: some homes for the aged and AFC homes can house a couple when one needs dementia care, but the home must be licensed and staffed for both.
Ask early, and ask what happens if needs diverge.
