Is there a Grand Rapids-specific cost of care figure?
Not one we can trace. The CareScout release we cite reports Michigan statewide medians, and we do not publish a Grand Rapids number we cannot source -- quotes here will vary above and below the state median.
What moves a quote: the license type (a large home for the aged with a nurse on staff usually prices differently from a six-bed AFC home), the care level the home assigns after its assessment, apartment size, and whether medication help and incontinence care are included or billed as add-ons. Ask every home for the all-in monthly cost at your parent's assessed care level, in writing.
What does memory care cost in Michigan?
No published median exists. CareScout does not survey memory care as a category, for Michigan or any other state, so any single memory care number you see online is an estimate.
Michigan's disclosure law helps here: a home for the aged or nursing home that markets dementia care must list its supplemental fees in its written dementia-services description (MCL 333.20178). Compare those fee sections line by line between homes.
How do Michigan costs compare with the national figures?
Michigan's assisted living median ($69,000) sits below the U.S. median ($74,400), while its nursing home medians run well above -- $135,050 versus $114,975 for a semi-private room -- and adult day health care is markedly higher ($39,000 versus $24,700).
CareScout reported Michigan's assisted living median down -5% from 2024, its semi-private nursing home median up 6% and its home care median up 2%. One year of movement in a survey is not a trend; treat these as the right order of magnitude for budgeting.
When is home care cheaper than assisted living in Michigan?
At Michigan's median rate of about $34.75 an hour, roughly 165 hours of home care a month -- under 40 hours a week -- costs about the same as the $5,750 assisted living median.
Below that, home care usually wins on cost, especially when a spouse or family member covers nights. Above it, or once overnight help is needed, a licensed home is usually less expensive and gives round-the-clock coverage. Housing costs at home (mortgage, taxes, utilities, food) belong in the comparison too.
