Does a hospice have to be based in my county to serve my parent?
No. Hospice care goes to the patient wherever they live -- a private home, an adult foster care home, a home for the aged or a nursing home -- and agencies cover service areas much larger than the town on their office address.
Ask any hospice whether it covers your parent's ZIP code, how quickly a nurse can visit after a call at night, and whether it has a contract with the specific home your parent lives in. Medicare's hospice benefit covers the hospice team, comfort medications and equipment, but not room and board in a facility.
How do families choose between hospices in West Michigan?
Compare three things: after-hours response, whether the hospice has an inpatient unit or residence for symptoms that cannot be managed at home, and the family survey results on Medicare's Care Compare.
You can change hospice providers once per benefit period, and you can stop hospice and return to curative treatment. Choosing a hospice is not a one-way door.
